Nandini Chakraborty, the former Chief Secretary of West Bengal, has been assigned a significant role in the BJP-led state government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. She will serve as the “principal coordinator for development works” directly under the Chief Minister’s Office, with specific responsibilities. One of her initial tasks is to oversee the transfer of land to the Border Security Force for erecting fencing along the Bangladesh border.
Chakraborty, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and the first woman Chief Secretary of West Bengal, was removed from her position by the Election Commission of India shortly after the announcement of state Assembly election dates. Despite her short tenure, she brings extensive administrative experience from various state government departments to her new role. Her responsibilities also include monitoring the implementation of centrally-sponsored development projects in the state.
Having previously held key positions such as state home secretary and secretary to the Governor, Chakraborty’s appointment as state secretary earlier this year sparked controversy due to the bypassing of senior IAS officers. With a background in political science and a history of service in critical government roles, she is entrusted with crucial tasks in the state government’s development initiatives.
