Former West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, who was summoned by the police for questioning regarding an FIR filed against him for vandalism at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan, requested a 14-day extension to appear for questioning due to medical reasons. The Bidhannagar (South) Police Station had initially asked him to appear on June 5 following the FIR related to an incident during Lionel Messi’s GOAT India Tour last year.
Despite being scheduled to appear the next day, Biswas, through a letter sent to the police station, cited medical grounds and submitted a medical certificate to support his request for a 14-day delay in his appearance for questioning. It remains uncertain whether the police will grant his plea for the extended time.
Former Trinamool Congress legislator Aroop Biswas, who lost the recent election to BJP candidate Papiya Adhikari, faced the FIR after a complaint by the organizer of the Messi event, Satadru Dutta. The police initiated the FIR on May 30 based on Dutta’s complaint, alleging misconduct during the Messi event in December.
Satadru Dutta, the event organizer, expressed approval of the police’s actions, stating that they were on the right track to identify those responsible for the chaos at the Messi event. Dutta had previously lodged a complaint against Biswas and others, leading to the FIR against the former minister.
The Bidhannagar South Police Station, acting on Dutta’s complaint, registered the FIR against Aroop Biswas and others involved in the alleged misconduct during the Messi event. Following the registration of the FIR, Dutta acknowledged the efforts of the current West Bengal Chief Minister, Sports Minister, and the state’s Director General of Police.
The complaint against Biswas accused him of involvement in black-marketing around 22,000 tickets for the Messi event, prompting an investigation by the Bidhannagar South Police Station. The new Sports Minister, Nishith Pramanik, also pledged to address the Messi event controversy upon assuming office.
