Four children in Bangladesh have passed away within 24 hours, showing symptoms consistent with measles, bringing the total confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 820. The recent fatalities are categorized as suspected measles deaths by the Directorate General of Health Services. The number of suspected measles fatalities has risen to 725, while the confirmed measles deaths remain at 95.

In the same timeframe, Bangladesh reported 990 new suspected measles cases, pushing the total number of suspected cases to 123,753. Additionally, 170 new confirmed measles cases were recorded, increasing the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to 15,442.

Since March 15, a total of 106,239 individuals with suspected measles have been hospitalized in Bangladesh. Among them, 102,467 have recovered, as per DGHS data. The country is facing a severe public health crisis, with an average of nearly four children succumbing to measles daily, and over 800 hospitalizations each day.

Despite the government surpassing its emergency measles vaccination target, hospitals are still receiving unvaccinated patients, highlighting gaps in vaccine coverage. The outbreak persisted in July, with an average of 1,005 suspected and confirmed measles cases, 821 hospital admissions, and around four deaths daily.

Health experts attribute the ongoing outbreak to vaccination gaps affecting around 40 lakh children, infections beyond the target age group, and weak infection prevention measures. The significant gap between measles-rubella and Vitamin A campaigns indicates a large number of vulnerable children remain unvaccinated.

The 40-lakh gap is deemed astonishing by experts, suggesting a flawed vaccination target. Limited public outreach and planning issues have hampered the measles vaccination campaign, with many families unaware of the revised vaccination schedule.
