Four traditional products from Assam have been granted Geographical Indication (GI) status by the Government of India. These products include Karbi Anglong Handloom Products, Assam Bihu Pepa, Assam Bamboo Crafts, and Deuri Handloom Products, showcasing the state’s rich cultural and artisanal heritage. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) played a key role in supporting and facilitating the certification process for these products.
The GI certification aims to protect these traditional products from unauthorized imitation and misuse while enhancing their market potential both nationally and internationally. This recognition is expected to benefit numerous rural artisans, craftsmen, and weavers in Assam by providing them with better market access, premium pricing, and increased recognition for their craftsmanship. NABARD envisions a strategic approach to promote GI products, focusing on creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural communities.
Loken Das, Chief General Manager of NABARD Assam, emphasized that the GI certification not only authenticates these products but also opens up avenues for economic growth and cultural preservation. The move towards creating a robust value chain for GI-certified products underscores efforts to promote inclusive rural development and safeguard Assam’s cultural heritage. This development marks a significant milestone in the preservation and promotion of Assam’s indigenous craftsmanship and rural livelihoods.
