A freight train transporting hazardous materials derailed in Mansfield, Connecticut, causing multiple train cars to overturn into a river. Mansfield Fire Chief John Roache confirmed that four train cars carrying liquid propane fell into the water, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. Authorities stated that there have been no signs of leaks or contamination as of noon following the incident.

A shelter-in-place directive has been issued within a half-mile radius of the accident site due to concerns about a potential hazardous gas leak, as per the Mansfield town government’s statement. Six railcars carrying liquid propane derailed, with four plunging into the water, while other cars contained liquified natural gas and food-grade grease, as mentioned by Fire Chief John Roache.

The derailment took place near Eagleville Lake along the Willimantic River, as reported by NECR. Cleanup efforts are expected to be prolonged due to the challenging location, with crews striving to access the site and bring in cranes for assistance, according to Roache. A nearby road has been closed, and residents are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

State and local hazardous materials teams, under the supervision of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, are closely monitoring for potential leaks. Precautionary hazmat booms have been deployed in the water. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
