Rising French talent Arthur Fils staged a remarkable comeback against American Tommy Paul in a quarterfinal showdown at the Miami Open, saving four match points to secure his spot in his first ATP Masters 1000 semifinal. In a nearly three-hour battle, the 21-year-old displayed nerves of steel, bouncing back from a 2/6 deficit in the final-set tie-break by winning six consecutive points for a thrilling victory without breaking Paul’s serve. Fils, seeded 28th, showcased an aggressive playing style, unleashing powerful shots as the match progressed, marking a significant milestone in his career after previously falling short in four ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinals.
This win also made Fils the youngest French semi-finalist at this level since Richard Gasquet achieved the feat in Paris back in 2007 at the same age of 21. Up next, Fils is set to clash with Czech player Jiri Lehecka, holding a 2-1 advantage in their head-to-head meetings, with their latest encounter resulting in a straight-sets victory for the Frenchman in Doha earlier this year. Lehecka booked his spot in the semifinals by defeating Spain’s Martin Landaluce 7-6(1), 7-5, halting the impressive run of the 20-year-old qualifier, who became the first player born in 2006 or later to reach the last eight of a Masters 1000 event.
Despite a valiant effort from Landaluce, he struggled to capitalize on opportunities, while Lehecka raised his game in crucial moments, particularly towards the end of both sets. The Czech player created numerous break-point chances, converting them effectively to clinch victory in just over two hours. This achievement marks Lehecka’s second Masters 1000 semi-final appearance, having reached a similar stage in Madrid in 2024 before retiring due to injury against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Following his impressive performances in Miami, Lehecka has climbed six spots to World No. 16 in the live rankings, matching his career-best position. Meanwhile, Landaluce is poised to ascend 48 places to World No. 103 after a breakthrough campaign that included victories over three Top-50 players.
