A recent incident at a public event in Kochi has reignited tensions between Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and the Kerala Students Union (KSU). The event at Sacred Heart College in Thevara saw the Chief Minister and State KSU President Aloysius Xavier in attendance. While addressing the gathering, Satheesan engaged with the crowd before leaving, while Xavier appeared to wait to meet him.
Video footage later revealed Xavier waiting to interact with Satheesan, who left without engaging with him. This incident comes amid a disagreement over government pleader appointments, sparked by the KSU unit at the Government Law College in Thiruvananthapuram questioning certain appointments. Satheesan’s response to this criticism was seen as dismissive by some, leading to further tensions.
Aloysius, in response, criticized Satheesan on social media and sought a meeting to discuss the issue, which reportedly did not happen. While Aloysius refrained from directly accusing the Chief Minister of ignoring him intentionally, he emphasized the organization’s stance on the broader issue. The incident has sparked internal debate within the Congress party, with some defending the KSU’s right to raise concerns and others criticizing statements that could weaken the state government.
Despite differing interpretations of the incident at Thevara, it has once again highlighted the ongoing discord between Chief Minister Satheesan and the Congress’ student wing, indicating a dispute that shows no signs of resolution.
