A new police complaint has been lodged against Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of Trinamool Congress and a member of the party’s Lok Sabha, at the Bhabanipur Police Station in Kolkata. The complaint, filed by Arnab Kanti Ghosh, accuses Banerjee of making objectionable social media statements on May 2, just two days before the results of the recent West Bengal Assembly elections were announced. It is unclear whether an official first information report (FIR) has been registered based on the complaint at this time.
Ghosh’s complaint alleges that Banerjee, who is the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, made comments in his social media posts that could potentially disrupt national unity and communal harmony. Specifically, Ghosh questions how a Lok Sabha member, who has sworn to protect the Constitution’s sovereignty and the country’s territorial integrity, could label the entire Gujarati community as a ‘gang’ or criminal group. The complainant argues that such remarks not only insult a specific community but also undermine India’s diverse culture and social cohesion.
The complaint further highlights the significant contributions made by the Gujarati community to business, economy, industrial development, and social welfare across various regions, including West Bengal. Ghosh deems the Lok Sabha member’s comments as highly irresponsible and a broad-based attack on a particular community. Concerns are raised that had the election results favored the Trinamool Congress, such statements could have incited political or communal tensions against the Gujarati community residing in the state. Despite these allegations, there has been no response from the Trinamool Congress on the matter.
