A recent statement by CPI(M) Tamil Nadu State Secretary P. Shanmugam has stirred a new political discussion in Tamil Nadu. Shanmugam suggested the potential merging of DMK and AIADMK, drawing criticism from DMK leaders for his remarks.
During an interview, Shanmugam defended his party’s alliances with both DMK and AIADMK over the years. He emphasized that these alliances were based on political circumstances rather than ideological compromises.
Shanmugam highlighted that electoral alliances are formed based on political realities and mutual benefits. He criticized the DMK leadership for targeting parties that left its alliance, calling it wrong and urging restraint from making hostile remarks.
Shanmugam pointed out that while DMK and AIADMK differ in ideology and history, both parties have deviated from their original principles. He mentioned that if the two parties eventually merge, it would not be surprising given the current political environment.
The discussions around a possible DMK-AIADMK collaboration emerged after the recent Assembly election. Reports indicated talks about forming a government together. Both CPI and CPI(M) supported the ruling government post-election to prevent political instability and President’s Rule.
