A new political controversy has arisen in West Bengal as Trinamool Congress legislator Sovandeb Chattopadhyay revealed a resolution signed by 67 party MLAs supporting him as the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly. However, expelled legislator Ritabrata Banerjee, the current official opposition leader, criticized Chattopadhyay’s endorsement, highlighting that some signatures were in block letters.
Banerjee raised doubts about the submission of the alleged nomination letter to the Speaker’s office and pointed out discrepancies in the document, including color variations between pages and missing signatures. Amid a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe, Banerjee refrained from further comments, suggesting that forensic experts should examine the document for clarity.
Trinamool Congress faced internal turmoil when two legislators, Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, flagged signature inconsistencies to the Speaker’s office, leading to a CID investigation. The party split last week, with 60 legislators forming a new group under Banerjee’s leadership, nominating him as the opposition leader along with three other leaders and a Chief Whip.
