The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated action against various food companies for allegedly breaching labelling regulations by using misleading brand names, trade names, and product claims. Notices have been issued to multiple food business operators (FBOs) for potential violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Companies such as Healthy Master, Neuherbs True Vitamin, and Plant B are among those that have received notices.
FSSAI has directed the food business operators to adhere strictly to established labelling and display rules to prevent misleading consumers. The regulator expressed concerns that certain trade names used by brands could mislead consumers about the nature or health benefits of their products. Notably, FSSAI flagged issues with products from Healthy Master, The Health Factory, and Emami’s Healthy & Tasty, citing potential violations of applicable regulations.
In specific cases, FSSAI highlighted concerns over products like Troovy’s “Healthy Mix” chips, where the term “healthy” might be misleading due to the presence of other ingredients not justifying the claim. Additionally, FSSAI pointed out that the term “True Vitamin” used by Neuherbs could create a false impression among consumers as it is not defined or recognized under existing regulations. The regulator also scrutinized the trade name “PLAN B Plant Based Vegan” for potentially misleading consumers about the products’ vegan certification status.
Furthermore, FSSAI issued notices to companies like Organic Wisdom, Shine Organic, and Two Brothers Organic Farms regarding the use of the term “organic” in their brand names. The regulator expressed concerns that these names could mislead consumers about the organic status of the products, noting the absence of required certifications and endorsements mandated by regulations. Companies are urged to comply strictly with labelling and display regulations to prevent consumer deception.
