India’s Ganemat Sekhon performed well in the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup Shotgun, scoring 70 out of 75 targets on the first day. She narrowly missed the top eight positions by just one point at the event held in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Chandigarh’s Ganemat Sekhon, a silver medalist from three years ago, emerged as the best-placed Indian shooter to potentially secure a spot in the top eight. The remaining 50 targets for qualification and the finals for both men and women are scheduled for the next day.
In the men’s category, Olympian Mairaj Ahmad Khan began strongly with a perfect 25 in the first series. However, he finished the day in 27th place with a total score of 71 after consistent performances in the subsequent series.
Another Olympian, Anantjeet Singh Naruka, started impressively with a perfect 25 in his first series but faced challenges in the following rounds, ending the day with a score of 69. National champion Gurjoat Singh Khangura also showcased his skills with a total score of 70 after completing 75 targets.
Bhavtegh Singh Gill and Abhay Singh Sekhon participated for ranking points, achieving scores of 71 and 70, respectively. Meanwhile, Women’s National Champion Raiza Dhillon and Parinaaz Dhaliwal concluded the day with scores of 69 and 66, respectively, after their performances in the competition.
Vanshika Tiwari and Rashmmi Rathore, competing for ranking points, scored 66 and 62, respectively. This event marks the second shotgun World Cup of the season, following the one in Tangier, Morocco, where Indian athletes did not secure any medals.
