Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has officially resigned from his position following the team’s disappointing FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed the termination of his contract, with talks set to begin with Jurgen Klopp for the national team’s leadership. The decision came after Germany’s unexpected Round of 32 exit to Paraguay, marking their first-ever loss in a World Cup penalty shootout.
Nagelsmann, in a confidential discussion with DFB officials post the defeat, requested to be released from his duties due to Germany’s lackluster performance at the tournament. The DFB approved his request unanimously, acknowledging his commitment and ambition since September 2023. Nagelsmann expressed that the team’s future must take precedence over his own, emphasizing the need for a fresh start after the disappointing World Cup campaign.
The DFB expressed gratitude towards Nagelsmann for his dedication and sincerity during his tenure. Assistant coaches Benjamin Gluck and Benjamin Huber will also depart alongside Nagelsmann. The federation revealed plans to engage in discussions with Jurgen Klopp, who has shown interest in assuming the vacant coaching role. Klopp, currently involved in Red Bull’s global football operations, reportedly has a contractual provision enabling him to transition to the Germany job.
