Germany’s Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, expressed delight at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s inaugural trip to India, emphasizing the extensive discussions encompassing defense cooperation, trade, investment, and migration. Chancellor Merz, during his Gujarat visit at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation, aimed to bolster the longstanding ties between India and Germany. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing defense and security collaboration, including joint exercises and exchanges of senior officials, marking a significant milestone in their strategic partnership.
Chancellor Merz’s visit, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership and 75 years of diplomatic relations, signifies a renewed vigor in bilateral relations. The leaders agreed to elevate their engagement by focusing on defense, space, and emerging technologies, alongside joint efforts in climate action, supply chain resilience, education, and cultural exchanges. Prime Minister Modi welcomed Germany’s participation in upcoming naval exercises and initiatives, underscoring the shared commitment to advancing military technology and strengthening strategic ties.
The leaders also highlighted the ongoing collaboration between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) for the Eurodrone MALE UAV program. This partnership is set to facilitate India’s access to advanced military technology and further solidify its defense cooperation with Europe, reflecting a mutual dedication to fostering innovation and security.
