Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, speaking after the ETPL 2026 Player Draft, highlighted the narrowing gap between cricket’s top teams and emerging nations. He pointed out the USA’s near-upset of India at the T20 World Cup as evidence of the progress made by developing teams. Maxwell emphasized the role of franchise leagues like ETPL in providing exposure for Associate nations to challenge the world’s best consistently.

Using the example of the USA’s performance at the T20 World Cup, Maxwell expressed confidence in the rapid improvement of emerging cricket nations. He believes that the ETPL can significantly contribute to Europe’s cricketing development by inspiring the next generation of players. Maxwell acknowledged the time needed to build a sustainable cricket culture but noted the increasing competitiveness of Associate nations against Full Members in recent ICC tournaments.

Maxwell emphasized the importance of regular opportunities for emerging teams to compete against experienced international sides. He highlighted the potential for these teams to challenge and push top cricketing nations to the edge, contributing to their upward trajectory. Maxwell concluded by stating that the success of the ETPL could lead to European teams further narrowing the gap with the world’s leading cricket nations.
