Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant paid tribute to Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on his 135th Jayanti and virtually inaugurated the Ambedkar Bhavan in Porvorim. The project, led by the Directorate of Social Welfare in collaboration with the Goa State Scheduled Castes and Other Backwards Classes Finance and Development Corporation, is expected to be completed within a year. Chief Minister Sawant expressed the government’s commitment to Dr. Ambedkar’s principles, particularly emphasizing the role of education in social empowerment.
The Chief Minister, speaking at a state-level event, announced that the Bhavan would be dedicated to the public by the next Ambedkar Jayanti. He encouraged meritorious students from SC and OBC communities to participate in national-level exams like NEET and JEE. Sawant highlighted the state’s efforts to provide ample scholarship opportunities to ensure financial constraints do not impede educational advancement.
Emphasizing the government’s inclusive approach through the ‘Swayampurna Goa’ mission, the Chief Minister reiterated the aim to extend welfare schemes to all segments of society at the grassroots level. The Ambedkar Bhavan is envisioned as a center for social progress and intellectual discussions for marginalized communities. Under Sawant’s leadership, the BJP government has broadened the social safety net for backward classes, introducing initiatives like the ‘Kanya Dhan’ scheme and the ‘Griha Aadhar’ program to support specific sections of society.
The administration has also simplified the process of obtaining caste certificates and improved credit facilities through the state’s finance corporation to promote entrepreneurship among the youth. Notably, budget allocations for the Directorate of Social Welfare have notably increased during Sawant’s tenure, facilitating the construction of community halls, vocational training centers, and housing renovations for the underprivileged.
