Golf in India has the potential to drive tourism, investment, and economic activity, according to Amandeep Singh Johl, CEO of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). Johl emphasized the role of golf in bringing families together during the Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series hosted by Equalsportz. He encouraged parents to see golf beyond just competition and to involve children without the pressure to excel immediately.
Johl, speaking on “Understanding Emerging Sports in India,” shared his personal connection to golf since the age of seven, highlighting its various aspects from a game to a social space and a platform for networking. He stressed that golf teaches integrity, likening it to life where one must play the ball as it lies, facing both good and bad breaks.
The CEO advised against introducing golf to children solely for championship aspirations, urging a more holistic approach. He emphasized golf as a family sport where generations can bond, emphasizing quality time spent together. Johl called for improved infrastructure and accessibility to expand golf’s impact beyond sports into areas like tourism, real estate, and investment.
Experts from various sports, including golf, chess, mixed martial arts, and squash, gathered to discuss emerging opportunities for young athletes in India. The panel, featuring figures like International Master Vishal Sareen and Crosstrain Fight Club CEO Siddharth Singh, explored topics such as parental support, coaching standards, financial hurdles, and athlete welfare. They advocated for exploring diverse sports beyond traditional choices to support the development of Indian athletes.
The Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series aims to facilitate discussions among parents, athletes, coaches, and experts to guide informed decisions in sporting careers and nurture the next generation of Indian athletes.
