The Central government has approved financial assistance of Rs 1,750 per quintal for Totapuri mangoes in Karnataka under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS). This relief aims to support mango growers who have been affected by low market prices and adverse weather conditions. The announcement by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi comes as a significant aid to farmers facing challenges during the current marketing season.
Expressing gratitude for the decision, Pralhad Joshi thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for their timely support to the mango growers in Karnataka. The move is expected to alleviate the financial distress experienced by many farmers in the state due to a sharp decline in mango prices.
To address the difficulties faced by mango growers, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi had appealed to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for assistance under the Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS). In response, the Union Agriculture Ministry swiftly approved financial aid for the affected farmers. Chouhan communicated the decision to Joshi through a letter outlining the relief measures for mango growers in Karnataka.
In a bid to protect the interests of mango farmers in Karnataka, the Centre will implement the Price Deficiency Payment (PDP) scheme under the Market Intervention Scheme for Totapuri mangoes during the 2026-27 marketing season. The approved financial assistance of Rs 1,750 per quintal will be applicable for procurement of up to 1,30,000 metric tonnes, with detailed operational guidelines issued to the state government.
The Price Deficiency Payment scheme will be effective for one month during the 2026-27 marketing season, requiring farmers to sell their produce through designated Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) markets in Karnataka. The state government will publish a list of authorized traders for Totapuri mangoes under the MIS framework for the upcoming season, with compensation for price losses to be directly transferred to registered farmers’ Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
