The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has received approval to upgrade the Khagaria-Purnea section of NH-31 and NH-231 to a four-lane highway. This initiative, sanctioned by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, aims to boost Bihar’s agricultural heartland’s economic prospects. The upgrade is set to enhance connectivity for transporting bananas and makhana, vital crops for the region’s economy.
Before this upgrade, traffic congestion and seasonal disruptions hampered the transportation of perishable goods like bananas and makhana. The improved connectivity is expected to reduce spoilage, maintain quality, and increase market opportunities for farmers. With an investment of Rs 3936.05 crore, this project focuses on benefiting the livelihoods of those reliant on efficient transportation of agricultural produce in Bihar.
The upgrade of the Khagaria-Purnea section will address historical vulnerabilities in eastern Bihar’s transport network, particularly to flooding. By incorporating engineering solutions to combat flood-related challenges, the project aims to ensure year-round reliable transportation. This strategic development is crucial for enhancing regional mobility and reducing travel times between key destinations in the state.
The four-laning of the Khagaria-Purnea corridor not only benefits Bihar but also holds significance for interstate connectivity in eastern India. Strengthening road links between Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, this project will alleviate longstanding issues such as congestion and insufficient geometric features along the corridor. By upgrading critical corridors and enhancing connectivity to economic and logistics hubs, the initiative is poised to transform transportation in the region.
