The government has confirmed a fire incident on MT Marivex, a ship carrying 24 Indian seafarers south of the Strait of Hormuz. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways stated that the fire was reported around 1:30 pm on Monday. According to a Ministry spokesperson, all Indian seafarers are reported safe based on preliminary information.
Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director in the Shipping Division, mentioned that they are investigating whether the ship was hit by a projectile. The Ministry is actively gathering information and coordinating with the owners, Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian mission in Oman. The Shipping Ministry is collaborating with various agencies, including the Indian Navy and Ministry of Defence, to ensure the safety of the seafarers.
The Embassy of India in Muscat is in contact with Omani authorities regarding the incident involving the Indian sailors. Last month, a tragic incident occurred in the same region where an Indian seafarer lost his life and four others were injured after a wooden dhow carrying 18 Indian crew members caught fire and capsized near the Strait of Hormuz. This area has been witnessing heightened security concerns due to ongoing tensions and reports of drone activities.
