Attacks on educational institutions have been on the rise in Lower South Waziristan, with two previous incidents in Birmal tehsil earlier this year. According to local reports, there have been 11 incidents of attacks on educational institutes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in 2026, resulting in 13 fatalities. This marks a significant increase compared to the previous year, indicating a concerning trend of escalating violence targeting schools in the region.
The Institute for Conflict Management Research Associate, Tushar Ranjan Mohanty, highlighted the alarming history of attacks on educational institutions in the region, dating back to 2006. The deadliest attack occurred in 2014 at the Army Public School in Peshawar, where a Tehreek-e-Taliban squad caused significant casualties. Such incidents underscore the ongoing security challenges faced by educational facilities in the area, with a need for enhanced measures to safeguard students and staff.
