The government clarified that there are no current plans to increase ethanol blending in petrol beyond the existing 20%, with any future decisions dependent on thorough scientific research and stakeholder consultations. Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, highlighted that no decision has been made to raise the ethanol blending target above E20. He emphasized that any proposal for an increase would only be considered after detailed scientific studies and consultations with relevant parties.

India successfully achieved its 20% ethanol blending target in petrol ahead of schedule, showcasing a significant rise from 1.53% in 2013-14 to 20% by the 2025-26 ethanol supply year after a phased implementation spanning over two decades. Minister Gopi mentioned that the ethanol blending initiative has brought about notable economic and environmental advantages since 2014-15. This program has led to substantial savings in foreign exchange, a reduction in crude oil imports, a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions, and additional income generation for farmers.

In response to concerns about vehicle performance, the government assured that there have been no widespread or substantiated complaints from vehicle manufacturers, automobile associations, or consumer groups regarding issues like engine failures, fuel pump problems, corrosion, or water contamination associated with E20 fuel. Minister Gopi stated that despite concerns raised in media reports and social platforms, these issues have been scientifically evaluated. More than 20 crore two-wheelers and over 3 crore petrol cars, including those manufactured before E20 certification, have been utilizing E15-plus and E19-E20 fuel for several years without verified evidence of widespread engine failures or vehicle breakdowns.

Citing industry data, Minister Gopi mentioned that a leading passenger vehicle manufacturer reviewed service records of 2.84 crore vehicles in 2025-26, including approximately 1.5 crore vehicles not certified for E20, and found no damages attributable to the fuel. A major two-wheeler manufacturer also echoed similar findings, indicating a lack of adverse effects from the fuel on vehicles.
