Due to the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, both government offices and private consumers in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, have recently been issued zero electricity bills. The initiative, which includes the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and Solarisation Scheme for Government Buildings, aims to reduce electricity costs for households and public offices, bringing significant changes to the power sector in Anantnag district.
The schemes have been instrumental in reshaping the energy landscape in residential and public sectors, paving the way for self-sufficiency within the district. Notably, a total of 2,398 Solar Rooftops (SRTs) with a capacity of 8.65 MW have been set up, and a subsidy of Rs 17.67 crore has been distributed among 2,394 beneficiaries under the PMSGMB Yojana.
Under the Solarisation Scheme for Government Buildings, rooftop solar installations have been completed in 242 buildings with a total capacity of 3,532 kW. The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) in Anantnag has reported that several domestic households and government buildings have achieved a milestone by recording “Zero Electricity Bills” post-installation, thanks to grid-connected rooftop solar setups.
The successful implementation of these schemes has not only led to financial benefits for consumers but also reduced the burden on the conventional power grid. Authorities are encouraging more households to enroll in the PMSGMB Yojana through the official national portal to embrace a future powered by clean, free, and sustainable energy. Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as a front runner in benefiting from national flagship programs, showcasing a positive shift in the region’s energy consumption patterns.
