Government Railway Police (GRP) in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district fired at suspects near Aluru railway gate in Ponnur mandal to prevent a train robbery around 3 A.M. The suspects, armed with cutters, attacked the police with stones and managed to escape in the darkness. This incident led to increased security measures in the area, with additional police forces deployed to safeguard passing trains.
Amidst a series of recent train robbery attempts in the region, GRP personnel encountered two suspicious individuals near a railway signal carrying tools to tamper with wires. Despite police attempts to apprehend them, the suspects retaliated by throwing stones, prompting the police to fire in self-defense. The suspects fled the scene, leaving behind incriminating items like a cutter and gloves.
GRP Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Akhleshwar Rao, confirmed that a total of 10 rounds were fired during the incident, with police launching a massive search operation to locate the suspects. Six teams comprising GRP and local police are actively pursuing the suspected robbers, as officials emphasize the need for heightened security to protect railway passengers from such criminal activities.
In response to the escalating train robbery incidents, police have been authorized to use firearms to prevent any further tampering with the signaling system. This proactive measure comes in the wake of a recent robbery on the Bengaluru-Narsapuram train in Bapatla district, underscoring the importance of enhancing security protocols to safeguard passengers and railway infrastructure.
