The government has decided to pause the fortification of rice temporarily. This decision aims to await the development of a more efficient nutrient delivery system. The move follows a review of rice fortification implementation under various welfare schemes, ensuring no impact on food-grain entitlements or operations like PDS and Mid-Day Meal Scheme.
A study conducted by IIT Kharagpur highlighted factors affecting the shelf life of Fortified Rice Kernels (FRK) and Fortified Rice (FR). The study emphasized the influence of moisture content, storage conditions, and packaging on the stability of these fortified products. The government noted that micronutrient reduction during storage limits the intended nutritional benefits, prompting the need for a more effective delivery mechanism.
With rice often stored for 2-3 years, the decision to halt fortification under PMGKAY and allied schemes until a better nutrient delivery method is identified is crucial. States and UTs have been granted flexibility to supply either fortified or non-fortified rice for the upcoming Kharif Crop season, considering operational and logistical factors. This transitional measure ensures a smooth transition amid the shift in fortification strategy.
