The decision to withdraw the draft of the ‘Sugarcane (Control) Order, 2026’ has been welcomed by Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Jayant Singh. Singh acknowledged the importance of feedback from farmers and stakeholders, stating that the move reflects a commitment to dialogue-based policymaking. The government took this step following suggestions and feedback received during the consultation process.
The Department of Food and Public Distribution, under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, announced the formal withdrawal of the draft Sugarcane (Control) Order, 2026. The decision to revisit the draft before further action was made after considering inputs from state governments and stakeholders. The communication regarding the withdrawal was sent to various ministries and organizations, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
In a recent development, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a 2.81% increase in the “fair and remunerative price” of sugarcane for the Sugar Season 2026-27. This increase, set at Rs 365 per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10.25%, also includes a premium for higher recovery rates and adjustments for lower recovery rates. The government aims to protect the interests of sugarcane farmers by ensuring a minimum price for their produce.
