Strong momentum in green building adoption was observed in North India, with the National Capital Region (NCR) leading the way, followed by Uttar Pradesh, experts revealed. Uttar Pradesh showcased 1,673 IGBC-registered projects covering 1.78 billion sq. ft. at the GreenTech Summit 2026, indicating the state’s rapid strides in integrating sustainability into its urban development, as per the CII Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Delhi, on the other hand, featured 794 projects spanning 0.63 billion sq. ft., solidifying its role as a significant contributor to India’s green building initiative.

The NCR displayed even more substantial growth, boasting a total of 2,475 registered projects covering 2.81 billion sq. ft. of green building space. Uttar Pradesh’s progress is spread across key urban hubs, with Noida and Greater Noida contributing 748 projects, Gurugram with 651 projects, and Faridabad and Ghaziabad jointly adding 282 projects. The GreenTech Summit brought together industry leaders, policymakers, technology innovators, and sustainability experts to drive the implementation of climate technologies in India’s construction sector.

India’s journey towards achieving Net Zero goals and the vision of Viksit Bharat by India@2047 was emphasized at the summit, highlighting the increasing significance of green technologies, low-carbon materials, digitalization, and integrated design strategies in shaping a sustainable and resilient future. Baljit Singh, Co-Chair of IGBC Delhi Chapter & Executive Vice President of Brookfield Properties, stated, “As India progresses towards Viksit Bharat 2047, with much of its infrastructure yet to be developed, we have a unique opportunity to design our cities with climate-resilient approaches, low-carbon technologies, and digital innovations. The choices made today will determine the sustainability and resilience of our future urban areas.”

The rapid embrace of green buildings is bolstered by forward-thinking policy frameworks, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. These policies include granting an additional Floor Area Ratio (FAR) for projects pre-certified or provisionally certified as IGBC Gold or higher, along with a complimentary 5% FAR provided by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) for projects achieving similar ratings. A recent report highlighted that in the Asia-Pacific region, green building certifications, energy monitoring, and stricter material compliance are increasing the baseline fit-out costs.
