Seasoned Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov continued his strong performance at the Nordea Open in Bastad by defeating Dalibor Svrcina 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-4, securing a spot in the tournament’s second round. Dimitrov, who recently reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, showcased his adaptability on clay courts, setting up a clash with fifth seed Nuno Borges, the 2024 champion.
With this victory, Dimitrov, aged 35, becomes the second-oldest match winner in Bastad this decade, following Rafael Nadal’s achievement in 2024. Despite facing a tough challenge from Svrcina, Dimitrov fought back from a set down and overcame a break deficit in the final set to emerge victorious after a grueling two-hour and 24-minute battle. The ATP Tour highlighted Dimitrov’s past success at the Bastad tournament, where he had reached the semifinals in 2012 and 2013.
Reflecting on his performance, Dimitrov acknowledged the challenging conditions and emphasized the importance of his fighting spirit and experience in securing the win. The Bulgarian player praised his opponent’s speed and shot-making abilities, crediting his own resilience and strategic play for the victory.
In other matches at the tournament, Andrea Pellegrino claimed a notable victory over Nicolai Budov Kjaer, earning his first tour-level win since defeating Frances Tiafoe in Rome in May. Pellegrino is set to face top seed Andrey Rublev in the next round. Additionally, seeded players Botic van de Zandschulp and Thiago Agustin Tirante also advanced with wins over their respective opponents, setting up intriguing matchups in the upcoming rounds.
