India’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd received the SKOCH Award for its Project Akansha, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative benefiting children and adolescents in Kolkata. The project, in collaboration with Child Rights and You (CRY), aims to enhance the lives of vulnerable communities in Kolkata, specifically in the Munshiganj and Watgunj-Hastings areas. Project Akansha focuses on providing a safe environment, education access, life skills training, self-defense sessions, nutritional support, and community engagement for children and adolescents.
The initiative has had a positive impact on school enrollment, life skills development, and community involvement in child protection efforts. It has facilitated the establishment of secure learning spaces and encouraged the active participation of mothers and local stakeholders in safeguarding children’s rights. GRSE, known for delivering India’s first indigenous warship in 1961, has since provided 117 warships to the Navy, Coast Guard, and other nations, making it the leading Indian shipyard in warship deliveries.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three warships constructed by GRSE into the Navy, including the advanced stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, survey vessel large INS Sanshodhak, and anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft INS Agray. Currently, GRSE is working on nine warships, including the advanced stealth frigate Vindhyagiri, four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels, and four anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft. Additionally, the shipyard is engaged in building commercial platforms and research vessels for various organizations.
GRSE also dominates the market for modular steel bridges in India, used by defense and government agencies for connectivity in challenging terrains. The shipyard is also involved in producing naval surface guns (NSGs) for warships. Through its CSR initiatives, GRSE emphasizes sustainable social impact by promoting education, empowerment, and holistic community development.
