Gujarat and Russia’s Astrakhan region have agreed to enhance collaboration in trade, education, shipbuilding, transport, and logistics. This decision follows a virtual meeting between Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Astrakhan Governor Igor Babushkin. The partnership between Gujarat and Astrakhan dates back to a cooperation agreement signed in 2001, which is valid until November 6, 2026.
Both sides have committed to advancing cooperation in trade, educational exchanges, and shipbuilding. Chief Minister Patel expressed Gujarat’s readiness to participate in transport and logistics under the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) project. He also highlighted opportunities in Gujarat’s shipbuilding sector. Discussions also revisited agreements made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2003.
The agreements encompassed cooperation in oil and gas, shipbuilding, food industries, fisheries, medicines, pharmaceuticals, education, human resource development, and cultural exchange. The meeting included talks on strengthening institutional ties between universities in Astrakhan and Gujarat. Proposals from a previous virtual interaction in February with Astrakhan’s Minister of Foreign Relations, Vladimir Golovkov, were also discussed.
Areas under consideration include investments in Astrakhan’s Special Economic Zone and memorandum of understanding agreements involving Gujarat’s agriculture, energy, and medical universities. Academic collaboration with maritime institutions through the exchange of maritime transport-related courses was also on the agenda. Cultural exchanges between Gujarat and Astrakhan were emphasized, with invitations extended for reciprocal delegations. Senior state government officials were also part of the meeting.
