The Gujarat Legislative Assembly is set to conduct an election for the deputy speaker position on February 16. Purnesh Modi from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shailesh Parmar from the Congress party have both submitted their nominations. The vacancy arose after the resignation of former deputy speaker Jetha Ahir (Bharwad) due to other commitments.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and members of the Business Advisory Committee were present as Purnesh Modi, a former state minister, filed his nomination. The BJP has officially backed Modi, highlighting his past experience as a cabinet minister and familiarity with legislative procedures.
Jitu Vaghani, endorsing Modi, praised his leadership qualities and track record. The Congress party has put forward Shailesh Parmar as its candidate for the deputy speaker election. Imran Khedawala from Congress expressed confidence in Parmar’s capabilities and confirmed party support for his candidacy.
In accordance with Assembly rules, proposing members must follow specific procedures, including submitting a motion and notice to the Assembly Secretary. The deputy speaker plays a crucial role in overseeing Assembly proceedings in the absence of the Speaker and ensuring the smooth functioning of legislative processes.
