Amreli, Aug 14 (IANS) Stories of around 75 freedom fighters from Amreli district, spanning the freedom movement, the Arzi Hukumat and the struggle against Portuguese rule, were showcased at an exhibition visited by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday as part of the state-level celebrations of the 80th Independence Day.

Organised by Deepak High School at Samarth Vyayam Mandir, the exhibition documents the lives, contributions and sacrifices of freedom fighters through photographs and information.

It features figures ranging from Gujarat’s first Chief Minister, Dr Jivraj Mehta, to Umangray Chhatbar, highlighting their role in the region’s history.

Patel inaugurated the exhibition by lighting the ceremonial lamp before going around the displays and paying tribute to the freedom fighters.

The exhibition seeks to bring accounts of their struggles and service to the nation before younger generations.

During his visit, the Chief Minister congratulated the management, trustees and organisers of Deepak High School for the initiative and appreciated the effort to document the contribution of Amreli’s freedom fighters.

The exhibition was among the programmes Patel attended in Amreli ahead of the state-level Independence Day celebration. Earlier, he participated in a tree plantation programme at the Shelter House on Savarkundla Road.

After the plantation programme, Patel was leaving for another event when he noticed local dignitaries standing outside.

He stopped his car, stepped out and spoke with them for a while, exchanging a few light-hearted words before proceeding.

Agriculture Minister and Amreli district in-charge Jitu Vaghani, MLA Mahesh Kaswala, Minister of State for Energy and Law, Kaushik Vekariya, and other dignitaries were present at the exhibition programme.

The state-level Independence Day celebration is being held in Amreli this year, with Patel scheduled to hoist the national flag at the Forward School ground on August 15.
