Gujarat has seen a significant increase in annual milk production over the last two decades, with a rise of 12.5 million tonnes. This growth has positioned the state as the fourth-largest milk producer in India, leading the way in what officials are calling “White Revolution 2.0”.
India remains the world’s top milk producer, generating approximately 247 million tonnes of milk each year, constituting nearly a quarter of global production. The country has experienced a 69% increase in milk production over the past decade, with an annual growth rate of 5.5%.
The dairy sector in India contributes close to five percent to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Per capita milk availability has also surged by 52% in the last decade, reaching 485 grams per person per day.
In Gujarat, annual milk production has surpassed 19 million tonnes, representing 7.78% of the national total. The state has maintained an average annual growth rate of 9.3% over the past 20 years. Gujarat’s per capita milk availability has risen by 48% in the last decade to 730 grams per day, significantly higher than the national average.
The growth in Gujarat’s dairy sector is attributed to sustained investments in animal healthcare, breeding programs, and dairy infrastructure. The state boasts a livestock population of nearly 2.75 crore animals, supported by an extensive network of veterinary facilities and services.
Amul, a prominent dairy brand, recently introduced an artificial intelligence platform named ‘Amul AI’, featuring a digital assistant named ‘Sarlaben’. This initiative aims to provide support and guidance to over 36 lakh farmer milk producers on various aspects of dairy farming.
Significant investments have been made in dairy infrastructure in Gujarat. Various schemes and funds have been allocated to enhance milk collection, improve breeding practices, and support dairy cooperatives across the state.
