Gujarat’s Minister of State for Sports, Jayram Gamit, highlighted the state’s international appeal beyond development, emphasizing its growing role in global sports during the Asian Weightlifting Championship 2026 opening in Gandhinagar. The prestigious event, held at Mahatma Mandir, saw the participation of over 400 athletes, technicians, and coaches from 29 Asian countries, including India. Gamit emphasized the significance of hosting such high-level competitions in enhancing Indian and state athletes’ exposure to international standards, boosting their confidence and performance.
Such events are viewed as pivotal in nurturing sporting talent in the country in the long run, according to Gamit, who also lauded Gujarat’s sports infrastructure development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Khelo India’ and ‘Khelo Bharat’ initiatives. The state currently operates 39 sports schools and centers of excellence at the district level, focusing on talent identification at the grassroots level and providing structured training. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a high-performance center for athletes in Gandhinagar, expected to be operational by 2027.
Looking ahead, Gamit mentioned India’s upcoming international sporting endeavors, with Ahmedabad set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and the country progressing towards bidding for the 2036 Olympic Games. The World Police and Fire Games scheduled for 2029 are poised to further elevate Gujarat’s status as a prominent sporting destination. International Weightlifting Federation President Mohamed Hassan Jaloud commended India’s successful hosting of the championship amid global tensions, expressing readiness to support similar events in the country.
Asian Weightlifting Federation President Mohamed bin Yousef Al Mana underscored the championship’s reflection of unity among Asian nations, portraying them as a cohesive sporting family. He extended best wishes to all participating athletes, acknowledging the event’s organization. Indian Weightlifting Federation President Sahdev Yadav and Sabina Yadav welcomed participants at the ceremony, providing insights into the championship proceedings.
