Odisha has been selected to host the first in-person technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Working Group under India’s presidency. The meeting is scheduled from 3 to 5 June 2026 at the Taj Puri Resort in Puri, Odisha, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi set to inaugurate the workshop on 4 June.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari highlighted Odisha’s expertise in disaster preparedness and cyclone management, emphasizing the state’s successful handling of major cyclones and natural disasters through timely evacuation and community participation. The meeting aims to gather delegates, policymakers, and experts to discuss strategies for enhancing disaster resilience and international cooperation in disaster risk reduction.
The three-day technical meeting will bring together representatives from BRICS member countries, partner nations, the Government of India, disaster management agencies, and technical experts. Discussions will focus on sustainable disaster risk reduction financing, resilient infrastructure, anticipatory response, and integrating traditional knowledge into disaster resilience strategies.
Delegates will have the opportunity to visit cyclone shelters and disaster management facilities in Odisha to learn firsthand about the state’s disaster preparedness model. Additionally, a sightseeing program is planned for the visiting delegates, and senior officials from the state government will engage with the delegates during a formal dinner on 4 June.
