The Gujarat government has named Anupam Singh Gahlaut, a senior IPS officer, as the new Ahmedabad City Police Commissioner, shifting him from his previous role as Surat City Police Commissioner. Gahlaut, a 1997-batch IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre, has been assigned to the vacant cadre post of Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad City, as per a notification from the Home Department. The post has been changed from an ex-cadre post in the Director General of Police (DGP) grade to a cadre post in the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) grade.
Gahlaut’s appointment comes after Gyanendra Singh Malik, a 1993-batch IPS officer, was appointed DGP of Gujarat last month, leading to the vacancy. Malik took over from K. L. N. Rao, who had been temporarily holding the state’s top police post. An engineer with a background in Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Gahlaut joined the IPS through the Civil Services Examination in 1997.
Having served in various operational, intelligence, and urban policing roles across Gujarat during his nearly three-decade-long career, Gahlaut has held key positions such as Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) and Additional Director General of Police (CID-Intelligence) in Gandhinagar. He previously served as Vadodara City Police Commissioner in July 2023 before being transferred to Surat City Police Commissioner in April 2024, where he has been overseeing policing in one of Gujarat’s major urban centers.
Recognized for his service, Gahlaut was honored with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2013. During his tenure in Surat, he spearheaded various policing initiatives aimed at enhancing traffic management, improving public grievance redressal, and strengthening policing in the city’s textile industry. Additionally, under his leadership, Surat Police announced plans to establish a specialized police station to investigate textile-related offenses.
