The Gujarat government has named Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Gyanender Singh Malik as the new Director General and Inspector General of Police (DGP) of the state. Malik, a 1993-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Gujarat cadre, takes over from the interim arrangement by senior IPS officer K. L. N. Rao. With over 30 years of service, Malik is one of the most experienced officers in the Gujarat cadre.
Originally from Haryana, Malik joined the IPS in 1994 and holds degrees in engineering and law. He has served in various key policing and administrative roles in Gujarat and at the Centre. Prior to his role as Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, he was on central deputation with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as Additional Director General (North).
Malik’s appointment as Ahmedabad Police Commissioner was part of a significant reshuffle of senior IPS officers in Gujarat in 2023. Throughout his career, he has been recognized with awards such as the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2017. He also held leadership positions within the state police fraternity and was elected president of the Gujarat IPS Officers’ Association earlier this year.
This appointment places Malik in charge of the Gujarat Police during a crucial period, overseeing policing in one of India’s most industrialized states. His responsibilities include managing law and order, crime investigation, internal security, and major public events. Official service records indicate that Malik is set to retire in November 2028, providing him with a tenure of over two years as the state’s police chief.
