The Gujarat government has revealed its state budget for the financial year 2026-27, amounting to Rs 4.08 lakh crore, the highest in the state’s history. State Finance Minister Kanu Desai presented the budget in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, marking his fifth consecutive annual budget speech. Desai outlined the budget’s foundation on five pillars, focusing on social security, human resource development, infrastructural facilities, economic activities, and green growth to plan comprehensively for the year.
The ongoing Budget Session, which commenced on Monday, is set to run until March 25, with a significant portion dedicated to budget debates and discussions. Speaker Shankar Chaudhary confirmed that the session will consist of 26 sittings during this period. Over the years, the state’s budget size has seen a steady increase, with the 2025-26 budget reaching Rs 3,70,250 crore, reflecting continuous growth in fiscal plans.
Governor Acharya Devvrat, addressing the Assembly at the start of the Budget Session, highlighted the state’s efforts, including disbursing Rs 9,610 crore in crop damage compensation to over 33 lakh affected farmers. He also mentioned technology-driven administrative reforms and the promotion of natural farming practices. The budget will undergo examination and debates by members in the upcoming weeks.
