Gujarat has initiated the sixth edition of ‘Robofest Gujarat’, a national-level robotics competition with a total prize pool of Rs five crore. The event, Robofest Gujarat 6.0, was inaugurated in Gandhinagar by Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia. The launch also witnessed the signing of two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) focusing on drone research infrastructure expansion and technology commercialization.

Modhwadia highlighted Gujarat’s transition from traditional industrial strengths to a global hub for advanced technology sectors like semiconductors, robotics, artificial intelligence, and hyperscale data centers. The Gujarat Department of Science and Technology, established in 2006 under then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, now operates across 11 major verticals, including space technology and biotechnology.

The minister emphasized the significance of robotics in scientific research, healthcare, and national security. He mentioned the successful robotic surgeries at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) and the increasing use of advanced robots and drones in modern warfare. Gujarat’s contribution to semiconductor projects and hyperscale data centers in India was also underscored.

The competition, themed “AI-Powered Robotics Innovation Challenge,” aims to foster artificial intelligence and robotics skills among young students and nurture researchers capable of global competition. With a prize fund of Rs five crore, the event will support winners and prototype developers through various competition stages. It will cater to both junior and senior categories of students, promoting STEM education and innovation.

GUJCOST signed an MoU with Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) to establish a statewide ‘Drone Laboratory Network,’ fostering education, security, and innovation. Another MoU was inked between GUJCOST and the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) to enhance technology transfer, intellectual property protection, and industry-academia collaboration. These partnerships aim to promote innovation and skill development in Gujarat.
