Polling for Gujarat’s local body elections ended on Sunday at 6 p.m. with an overall voter turnout of 57.14%. Taluka panchayats had the highest turnout at 61.22%, followed by district panchayats at 60.66% and municipalities at 58.12%. Municipal corporations had a lower turnout of 48.55%, with Ahmedabad recording 45.35% for the municipal corporation polls.
The elections covered 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats in Gujarat. Over 9,900 seats were contested, with more than four crore voters participating, making it a significant democratic exercise. The voting process, held using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), involved extensive administrative and security measures.
More than 4,000 polling stations were set up in Ahmedabad district alone, with tens of thousands of polling personnel ensuring smooth conduct. The elections featured a competitive scenario with major parties like BJP, Congress, AAP, and AIMIM, along with independent candidates. The counting of votes is scheduled for April 28, determining the composition of local self-government institutions in Gujarat.
