Gujarat opens modern district jail with rehabilitation facilities, 370-prisoner capacity

Anand, Aug 14 (IANS) A new district jail at Bakrol in Anand, with capacity for 370 prisoners and facilities aimed at rehabilitation alongside security, was inaugurated by Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Friday.

Built at an estimated cost of Rs 67.52 crore, including electrification, the jail is spread across 1,20,000 square metres and has a built-up area of 16,356.10 square metres. It can accommodate 330 male and 40 female prisoners.

The facility has been designed to provide inmates with opportunities for rehabilitation and development, with vocational training, legal aid, a study centre and library.

It also includes indoor games facilities, a cultural hall, meditation hall and an open-air theatre.

Essential facilities at the complex include a hospital, canteen, laundry, barber shop and welfare office.

Security infrastructure includes high-security barracks, a women’s barrack, an undertrial barrack and watch towers.

A courtroom equipped for video conferencing and a dedicated State Reserve Police barrack have also been provided.

The administrative building and kitchen-cum-dining hall have been equipped with modern facilities for the management and security of the jail.

Sanghavi also e-inaugurated newly constructed C-08 and B-16 category police quarters at the Nadiad District Jail at Bilodra in Kheda district.

The quarters, constructed by the Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation Limited, have been built at a cost of Rs 689.45 lakh, according to the details provided.

They include facilities such as lifts and fire-fighting systems and are intended to provide residential accommodation for police personnel and their families.

A further 50 residential quarters, comprising B-36, C-12 and D-02 categories, have been constructed within the Bakrol jail complex for jail officers and staff.

Ministers Raman Solanki, Kamlesh Patel and Sanjaysinh Mahida, along with Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, senior dignitaries and senior police officials, attended the inauguration.

After the ceremony, Sanghavi and other officials inspected the new jail complex, including the women’s yard and high-security cells.
