Police in Gujarat’s Anand district have successfully obtained convictions in all seven cases filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act between March and December 2024. Six offenders have been given life imprisonment, while another received a 20-year prison term. Additional judgments on Friday sentenced the accused in two cases to life imprisonment.
With these recent verdicts, six out of the seven convicted offenders have been handed life sentences along with fines, while one case resulted in a 20-year prison term. The cases involved sexual offenses against minors, with chargesheets filed within a maximum of 45 days of the offenses being reported.
Courts delivered judgments in most cases within eight to nine months, following a focused and time-bound investigation by the police. The investigations were overseen by Anand Superintendent of Police G.G. Jasani.
The cases were managed by Police Inspector D.R. Chaudhary from Petlad Division, who is now serving at Borsad police station, along with his team. The investigation team took a comprehensive approach while handling the cases, utilizing both traditional investigative methods and technological tools to bolster the evidence presented in court.
Witness statements and panchnamas were recorded using the e-Sakshya application with video documentation to maintain the integrity of evidence during legal proceedings. Scientific and medical evidence, collected with the assistance of the Crime Scene Manager and the Forensic Science Laboratory, played a crucial role in securing the convictions.
Prompt investigation, timely charge sheet filings, and the use of scientific evidence were cited as key factors contributing to the 100% conviction rate in these cases. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi commended Police Inspector D.R. Chaudhary and his team for their diligent work in the investigations.
Sanghavi praised the preparedness and sensitivity of the Gujarat Police, emphasizing the government’s commitment to zero tolerance for crimes against women and minors. He warned that strict action would be taken against offenders involved in such crimes. The swift handling of these cases reflects the state government’s dedication to ensuring timely action in matters concerning minors.
