Gujarat has readied 14 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and 22 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams in anticipation of the monsoon season. The state’s administration aims for “zero casualty” during heavy rains and floods. A high-level pre-monsoon meeting chaired by Chief Secretary M. K. Das in Gandhinagar reviewed the preparedness plan, with senior state officials and heads of various departments in attendance.
Das emphasized the state’s readiness for the monsoon and urged all departments to effectively implement their disaster management plans. He directed officials to ensure ample stocks of essential items like commodities, medicines, and relief supplies to assist citizens during heavy rainfall or flooding. Control rooms at state, district, and taluka levels are to be operationalized promptly before the monsoon onset as per Das’s instructions.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s directives were highlighted by the Chief Secretary, emphasizing full preparedness to avert any loss of life during the rainy season. Completion of pending road and drainage works in urban and rural areas was stressed to minimize public disruptions. The Forest Department was tasked with tree-trimming to prevent tree falls during rain and strong winds, which can cause traffic congestion and casualties.
Monitoring of water inflows and storage conditions at major reservoirs, including the Sardar Sarovar and Ukai dams, was also emphasized. The Revenue Department’s Additional Chief Secretary Jayanti Ravi announced the deployment of 14 NDRF teams and 22 SDRF teams across the state for rescue and emergency response during heavy rainfall periods. These teams will be equipped with boats, life jackets, and advanced communication systems.
Officials from various departments and agencies presented disaster management plans at the meeting, coordinated by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). This included meteorological authorities, central security forces, urban development, health, roads and buildings, and supply departments. Representatives from armed forces, Border Security Force, Coast Guard, and other agencies were also part of the review meeting.
