Gujarat Titans’ assistant coach, Pathiv Patel, has expressed support for Washington Sundar despite his reduced bowling chances this season, attributing it to tactical reasons rather than fitness issues. Sundar, an all-rounder, has faced challenges in finding consistency due to being frequently moved in the batting order and the Impact Player rule favoring specialists. This season, the team has placed Sundar in the top four to provide him with stability and a defined role.
Patel clarified that the decision to decrease Sundar’s bowling workload is strategic, not due to any physical concerns. He explained that the choice is based on conditions and match-ups, with the team aiming to utilize Sundar effectively in suitable situations. Patel emphasized that Sundar is bowling well, and the team is making calculated decisions based on game circumstances.
Addressing concerns about the team’s middle order, Patel highlighted that the focus has been on the top three batsmen to steer the game and finish it, leading to fewer opportunities for the middle order. Despite this, players like Glenn Phillips and Shahrukh Khan are prepared to contribute when required. The team aims for a settled batsman to close out games, but overall, Patel expressed confidence in the middle-order unit.
Gujarat Titans have prioritized maintaining a balanced approach with defined player roles and a strong top-order strategy, resulting in a three-match winning streak. Their upcoming challenge against Mumbai Indians on Monday will test their consistency and strategic gameplay.
