Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill emphasized the team’s aim to consistently post high totals in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season starting on March 28. Gill highlighted the importance of outscoring opponents and achieving par targets rather than focusing on setting record-breaking scores. The team’s strategy is to perform well in various conditions and not just on favorable pitches, as stated by Gill during a recent press conference.
GT, the 2022 IPL champions, will kick off their 2026 campaign against Punjab Kings on March 31. Head coach Ashish Nehra supported Gill’s approach, emphasizing the team’s goal to secure victories regardless of the playing conditions, whether at home or away. Since their debut, GT has made it to the playoffs in three out of four seasons, winning the championship in their first season and finishing as runners-up in 2023.
Nehra addressed criticisms regarding GT’s middle-order performance, attributing it to the top three batsmen consistently scoring heavily and facing the majority of overs in matches. He defended the middle-order players, such as Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, and Sherfane Rutherford, stating that they fulfilled their roles effectively throughout the season. Nehra acknowledged that finishing matches under pressure, especially against top bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah or Jofra Archer, is a challenging task for lower-order batsmen.
