Gujarat plans to set up ‘Namo Swadeshi Urban Malls’ in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot to boost markets for local artisans and traders. These malls, part of the Gujarat Urban Livelihood Mission, will offer spaces for direct sales of locally-made goods in urban areas. The initiative by the Urban Development and Urban Housing Department aims to support indigenous products and livelihoods.
The malls will provide a platform for artisans, self-help groups, and small industries to showcase and sell their products in an organized manner. This move follows the success of previous ‘Swadeshi Melas’ held in Gujarat’s urban centers during the state’s Urban Development Year 2025-26. These events served as temporary platforms for local producers to reach urban consumers.
Aligned with national campaigns like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, the urban malls aim to promote the purchase of locally-made goods. With an allocation of Rs 45 crore in this year’s budget, the state government plans to establish these permanent marketplaces and continue organizing Swadeshi Melas. The project seeks to enhance marketing opportunities for artisans and small traders in Gujarat’s major cities.
The ‘Namo Swadeshi Urban Malls’ will not only facilitate retail sales but also host exhibitions showcasing products from local artisans and enterprises. By creating a direct link between buyers and producers, these malls aim to encourage citizens to support indigenous products and boost the local economy.
