Gujarat’s budget for the fiscal year 2026–27 has been announced at Rs 4.08 lakh crore, marking a 10.2% increase from the previous year. Finance Minister Kanu Desai presented the budget in the Legislative Assembly, with 65% of the total expenditure allocated for developmental purposes.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel praised the budget for propelling the state’s growth trajectory without introducing new taxes. He highlighted that 39% of the outlay is directed towards capital expenditure to boost infrastructure expansion through sound financial management. The budget is structured around five key pillars including social security, human resource development, infrastructure, economic growth, and green initiatives.
The budget emphasizes empowering marginalized groups such as the poor, youth, farmers, and women. Notably, over Rs 64,000 crore, constituting 20% of the total allocation, has been reserved for education, sports, art, and culture. Patel also mentioned a special allocation of Rs 226 crore for the ‘Namo Gujarat Skill and Employment Mission’ to nurture a skilled workforce.
In a nod to environmental concerns, the Chief Minister disclosed that over Rs 15,000 crore has been allocated under the Green Budget. The state has allocated more than Rs 35,000 crore for tribal development, including plans for a lift irrigation scheme covering substantial tribal areas and the establishment of new employment hubs in tribal regions.
The budget also includes provisions for enhancing sports infrastructure and modern transport facilities in Ahmedabad, gearing up the city for potential Commonwealth Games hosting. Noteworthy allocations encompass projects like the Gujarat High-Speed Corridor, climate-resilient roads, and investments in artificial intelligence and digital governance initiatives.
Patel acknowledged the contributions of Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in securing the opportunity to host major events. The budget also earmarks funds for Regional Economic Master Plans to ensure balanced economic growth and progress towards the ‘Viksit Gujarat @2047’ vision.
