Gujarat’s per capita income has exceeded Rs 3 lakh for the first time, standing at approximately 60% higher than the national average, as per official data released recently. This milestone underscores the state’s consistent economic progress, with Gujarat contributing 8.3% to India’s GDP despite having around 5% of the population and 6% of the land area. Additionally, Gujarat holds a 19% share in the country’s total industrial production and contributes 26% to India’s exports.
The state’s growth is attributed to “efficient financial management and pro-business policies,” with Gujarat maintaining an average growth rate of 11.4% over the past decade, surpassing the national average. Furthermore, Gujarat has sustained a real growth rate of 8.42% in recent years. The government highlighted that former Chief Minister and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the groundwork for Gujarat’s development trajectory from 2001 to 2014, which has been sustained through positive governance, proactive policy-making, and public involvement.
Gujarat’s industrial prowess is complemented by its significant role in global trade, handling about 40% of India’s cargo through its ports. This position solidifies Gujarat as a crucial gateway for India’s global trade activities. The state leads the nation’s chemical industry with a 33% share and has diversified into emerging sectors like semiconductors and financial technology. Gujarat’s development spans various sectors from agriculture to fintech, aligning with the broader vision of a developed India.
Digital governance initiatives have been expanded in Gujarat, with programs such as e-Gram and Seva Setu aiming to provide technology and public services to remote regions, facilitating paperless administration and citizen services. Noteworthy infrastructure projects underway include the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train, set to reduce travel time between key cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Surat while boosting economic activities. Additionally, construction progresses at Lothal for the National Maritime Heritage Complex, aimed at reviving and showcasing India’s maritime heritage.
Upgrades in tourism and religious infrastructure are in progress, including projects like the Sagar Darshan Path near the Somnath temple and a corridor project at Ambaji, along with the 51 Shaktipeeth Parikrama Path. Celebrating its 66th Foundation Day, the state government emphasized that Gujarat, through robust financial discipline, transparent governance, and entrepreneurial endeavors, is advancing towards contributing to the national vision of ‘Viksit Bharat at 2047,’ emerging as the country’s growth engine.
