Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini inaugurated an electric bus depot in Panipat and started 80 e-buses, marking a shift towards green public transport. Saini emphasized the commencement of a new era of clean, modern, and eco-friendly transportation in Haryana from Panipat. Out of the 80 e-buses, 40 are designated for Panipat, 15 for Yamunanagar, 10 each for Kurukshetra and Sonipat, and five for Panchkula.
A state-of-the-art electric bus depot costing Rs 7 crore has been established in Panipat, with plans for similar depots in eight other districts. The government’s focus on enhancing public transport aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Green India’, ‘Net Zero’, and ‘Sustainable Development’. Saini highlighted the global trend towards environmental protection and green energy, emphasizing the need to reduce reliance on petrol and diesel in favor of electric mobility.
The introduction of electric bus services is expected to decrease the use of traditional fuels, mitigate pollution, and offer safe, comfortable, and modern travel options to the public. Haryana City Bus Service Ltd is actively working to make urban life more convenient and eco-friendly. Under the Haryana Vision — 2047 initiative, plans for transport services over the next five years were recently reviewed to cater to the expanding urban areas.
Efforts are underway to integrate buses with a tracking system similar to the Indian Railways, enabling passengers to track bus locations and arrival times through a mobile application. Additionally, the government plans to construct 10 new electric bus stands within a year and procure more electric buses in the future.
