Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi led a high-level review meeting in Chandigarh to enhance the implementation of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Emphasizing the importance of a coordinated approach, Rastogi urged district administrations to boost awareness campaigns and enforcement measures against dowry-related issues. He highlighted the need for clear delineation of responsibilities for Dowry Prohibition Officers to ensure effective law enforcement.
Rastogi noted that Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) in Haryana were designated as Dowry Prohibition Officers in 2015. He stressed the proactive role these officers should play in addressing complaints, raising awareness, and collaborating with law enforcement for prompt action. The Chief Secretary instructed Deputy Commissioners to conduct extensive awareness initiatives in partnership with the Haryana State Legal Services Authority, focusing on youth, educational institutions, and rural communities.
To combat dowry demands, Rastogi underlined the significance of social resistance and awareness creation about the legal consequences of dowry transactions. He acknowledged the societal pressures faced by families due to dowry customs, emphasizing the need for collective action. Additionally, he directed for improved accessibility to grievance redressal mechanisms by prominently displaying contact details of Dowry Prohibition Officers at district and sub-divisional levels.
Rastogi also highlighted the necessity for regular training programs for police and judicial officials handling dowry-related cases. He emphasized thorough examination of complaints under Section 304-B and Section 498-A to ensure timely justice for victims of dowry deaths and cruelty against married women, while expediting case resolutions.
